List of Vegetable and Food Market in Yiwu
Xinma Road Market Located at No.12 Xinma Road of Choucheng Sub-district, Xinma Road Market is a Star-grade Model Market in Zhejiang Province. Covering a building area of 14,800 square meters, it is the largest vegetable retail market in Yiwu with over 1,000 stalls, shop fronts and refrigeration storages, and 18 categories such as vegetables, meat, cooked food, spices, eggs, aquatic products, marine products and poultry. It also consists of such management and service facilities as food safety check, animal quarantine, logistics dispatching, refrigeration storage and parking. With a daily customer flow of over 20,000 people, daily traffic flow of over 6,000 cars, the market’s business volume reaches RMB380 million in 2004.
Established in 1984, Xinma Road Market used to be a commodity trading market (the second-generation commodity market of Yiwu). In 1986, the commodity market moved to the third-generation commodity market (where Yiwu Knit Good Market is located today) due to expansion needs, and Xinma Road Market changed to a non-staple food market. In November 1995, the non-staple food market was relocated to Binwang Market after the local government’s adjustment in market planning, and the construction of a vegetable market has broke ground in the old site since January 1996, which was put into use in May 1996. As Xiuhu Food Market, which was built not long after the liberation and became Yiwu’s largest vegetable market in the 1990s, was closed in August 1997 for urban development, individual operators moved to Xinma Road Food Market, resulting in its ranking as the major circulation channel of “Vegetable basket project” in Yiwu.
Due to its early establishment, Xinma Road Market, with relatively backward planning and design as well as old market hardware facilities, cannot satisfy the market development demands. In 2004, the local government planned to build Yiwu Central Food Market (Priority Project of Yiwu in 2004), which combines various operation modes and satisfy different consumer needs, and will be a modern market for farm and side-line products to replace Xinma Road Food Market once completed.
